In 2018, Tan Sri Ambrin chaired the Special Investigation Committee on Governance, Procurement and Finance established by the Malaysian Government. With extensive experience in public sector auditing, governance and integrity, he has contributed to numerous seminars and conferences locally and internationally. Q | Tan Sri, you made a comparison between Petronas, Khazanah, and 1MDB – all government-linked companies. The first two companies have very strong governance. What happened to 1MDB?
TSAB | PNB Holdings has a string of subsidiaries some of which are performing and some not. They are accountable because they have to report and give dividends to the people, their investors and depositors.
On the other hand, 1MDB did not have depositors, it was just the government. So, what can we learn from this? I say that the best thing is not to have the power of dealing with money concentrated in the hands of just one man, especially if the man is the Prime Minister, and also the Minister of Finance at the same time.
